— In oat meSocotyl tissue ( Avena sativa , var. Nuprime), red light (660 nm) modifies the level of adenylic nucleotides. Two types of action have been shown. The first takes place during illumination; there is an increase in the level of ATP and, at the same time, a decrease of ADP. This effect disappears within 5 min after the end of illumination. The second takes place 1–2 hr after illumination when mesocotyl segments are put in growth medium. The ATP level drops in the red‐illuminated fragments compared to those kept in the dark. There is no difference in the ADP level under these two conditions. It is not yet known if this light action is a phytochrome‐mediated process.
