— This paper reports the isolation and the identification of ammonia, methylamine, 5‐carboxy‐l, 3‐dimethyluracil, acetic acid, formic acid, 5‐formyluracil, and formaldehyde from an aqueous solution of 1,3‐dimethylthymine which was irradiated with 254 mμ light resulting in a decrease of 50 per cent of the original ultraviolet absorbancy. The isolation of 5‐formyl‐l, 3‐dimethyluracil as a major photoproduct indicated the possible photo‐oxidation of the 5‐methyl group of thymine derivatives. The possible presence of an oxidized intermediate in DNA may prove important in radiation biology.
