Summary The effects of instrumental geometry on the measurement of absorption spectra of scattering suspensions are considered. It is shown that the resolution of absorption spectra of cell suspensions is not improved by opal glass if a spectrophotometer receiving a large cone of light is used. The scattering of light by suspensions of several algae is found to be approximately proportional to the fourth power of the frequency, as would be expected if the scattering is due to small particles.
