SUMMARY: Four Australian isolates of Gram‐negative nonfermentative bacteria obtained from poultry were compared with reference strains of Bordefella avium, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Alcaligenes faecalis. The Australian isolates were identified as Bordetella avium. A routine procedure for the identification of this recently recognised poultry pathogen is described.
