SUMMARY Epidemiological, clinical and pathological features of poisoning of livestock by plants of the genus Swainsona are reviewed in the light of the recent identification of the active principle, swainsonine. This indolizidine alkaloid acts by inhibiting lysosomal α‐mannosidase and the disease is identified as an induced mannosidosis. This knowledge allows recommendations to be made for the management of animals exposed to Swainsona .
