SUMMARY Hydrophilic contact lenses were developed for use in the eyes of cattle. With prolonged wear, corneal edema developed. Bacterial numbers increased in the conjunctival sac after lens insertion but this increase was not associated with the corneal edema. Based on studies in other species corneal edema was attributed to anoxia.
