Summary Enlarged thyroids up to 100 g were found on three properties in the Crookwell district of New South Wales in new‐born lambs which died within a few days of birth. A decrease in thyroid iodine concentration and a retardation in the osseous maturity were found in many of these lambs. Histologically, the thyroids showed colloid goitres. This was associated on two of the properties with a 30% loss of lambs in the first few days after birth. Some increase in thyroid size could be detected in clinically normal lambs. None of the known goitrogenic plants was known to have been eaten by the ewes, which had grazed largely on subterranean clover and rye grass.
