— Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death during adolescence, but developmentalists rarely study teen driving behavior. This article argues that developmentalists can help reduce motor vehicle accidents and deaths and that studies focusing on teen driving behavior can inform developmental theory. It reviews current research and potential contributions from developmentalists with expertise in parenting and peer relationships; identifies potential contributions from developmentalists with expertise in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development; and discusses similarities and differences between driving behavior and other behaviors that developmentalists more commonly study.
