— How does understanding of knowledge and knowing develop and why is it important? This article argues that it provides a critical foundation for the development of intellectual values, which in turn are central to educational outcomes. Because evidence indicates that this development does not routinely occur in the absence of specific efforts to support it, developmentalists need to join educators in seeking to identify the kinds of experiences that can best provide this support.
