This article reviews the extant literature on citizenship and transnationalism, paying particular attention to the impact of migration on citizenship models and practices. I further address three areas of inquiry that have lagged behind in this scholarship. First, I highlight the neglect of emotions in the study of citizenship and transnational migration. Second, I criticise the tendency for scholars to privilege the experiences of immigration regimes at the expense of sending state experiences. Finally, I use selected examples to underscore the importance of studying citizenship trajectories outside of the Anglo‐American and European contexts. These critical interventions signal new approaches to advance the scholarship on citizenship, migration and transnationalism.
