This article examines recent sociolinguistic research on the varieties of Spanish spoken in the USA and Canada, with emphasis on work in the variationist tradition. 2 First, the increasing diversity of the North American Latino population is outlined. Representative studies of structural variation are then examined, with an emphasis on studies that examine lateral contact among Spanish dialects as well as contact between Spanish and English. The article then reviews recent studies that focus on the complexities of social identity in Latino communities, complexities that extend well beyond national origin or social class. Finally, we offer suggestions for future research.
