A paired‐t test has shown that, statistically, proper shortening of the pond bank grass covering increased the harvested yields of production ponds. This increase is assumed to be due to higher harvest efficiencies and the resultant timely removal of as many market size prawns as possible. From October 1983 to May 1984, an annual adjusted yield of 2,300 kg per harvested hectare was achieved in ponds with properly maintained banks. In contrast, ponds with long grass covered banks yielded 1,916 kg per harvested hectare. These results showed clearly the importance of high harvest efficiency in managing a fresh water prawn production facility.
