The mariculture enterprise of Hong Kong is expanding and many varieties of fish, among them Siganus canaliculatus , are being cultured in cages. Investigations show that the siganids have a definite spawning period from March to June. This finding is based on such aspects as stage of oogenesis, development of oocyte to maturity and seasonal variation of oocyte maturation. From statistical analysis, a 1:1 ratio has been found between the male and female during reproduction. The fecundity studies showed that about half a million eggs are produced and fecundity varies with fish size. The gonadosomatic index also indicates that March to June is the period of reproduction of S. canaliculatus in Hong Kong waters.
