Aquacultural Research Corporation has been active in commercial molluscan mariculture for 20 years. The paper reviews frustrations and rewards from the personal point of view of the author and includes: factors leading to the selection of hard clams and scallops as principal products, difficulties encountered in algal production and hatchery operations, and field problems including regulation, predation, poaching, storm damage, mass handling of product, etc. Immediate and long‐term plans are discussed.
