Since 1972 there has been a continuous research program at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research to develop techniques for rearing penaeid shrimps for restocking purposes and also for subsequent commercial cultivation to market size. During this period research has been concentrated on Penaeus semisulcatus , the major commercial species in the Arabian Gulf, although Penaeus japonicus and Metapenaeus affinis have also been reared. A summary of the experimental results and the economic feasibility for commercial production in Kuwait is provided.
