Juvenile American lobsters (Homarus americanus) cultured at the Bodega Marine Laboratory were found to be susceptible to a chitinolytic bacterium under certain stress conditions. Under optimal conditions the animals were uneffected by the organisms. The greatest susceptibility was found on animals fed a long‐term synthetic diet and on animals that were treated with malachite green and fed on a short‐term synthetic diet. Excised appendages, carapace abrasion and heavy bacterial inoculation did not increase susceptibility.
