High density fish culture in water re‐use systems results in a rapid buildup of nitrate as a result of nitrification. The LD 50 of nitrate for salmonids in both fresh and seawater is relatively high, but levels considered safe are much lower. In practice safe levels of nitrate are maintained by dilution, which restricts the percent re‐use possible, or by denitrification. The later will theoretically permit 100% re‐use, or it can be used to provide an effluent stream meeting presently established standards for discharging waste water. Problems involved in the activation of a flexiring packed, denitrification column operating on a side stream from a salmonid culture system are discussed.
