This is a review of shrimp culture as practiced in North America today. It is information gained primarily from experimental work in artificial ponds with white shrimp ( Penaeus setiferus ), brown shrimp (p. aztecus), and pink shrimp (p. duorarum). It is not intended to be a definitive review of all work done, but rather is based on the author's experience, and slight knowledge of other work. We are still in the early stages of shrimp culture in this country, and have not closed the life cycle. Presently we must catch gravid females at sea and bring them to a laboratory for spawning and hatching. This laboratory technique for spawning is well established but many aspects of commercial production in ponds have yet to be proven.
