This chapter describes how I developed my self‐psychological perspective. It provides the reader with a short summary of my personal history—how I grew up in New York City and now live and work as a psychoanalyst in Munich, Germany. Included is a description of important mentors in my life who have provided me with invaluable support. At the end of the chapter there are two cases presented. The first describes the case of Mrs. A. She entered analysis with a great difficulty in her ability to speak (i.e., a deficit in her narrative self). The second case of Mr. B provides the reader with two complete analytic sessions. I do not comment on the content and intent of my interventions or interpretations but leave it open to the readers to develop their own thoughts, and, if they like, they can send me personal feedback to my e‐mail address.
