Growth hormone (GH), an important anabolic hormone, may serve as a measure of positive health. GH is related to more rapid wound healing and speedy recovery from burns, whereas GH deficiency is related to mortality. Excessive exposure to stress may increase cortisol reactivity and decrease activity of the somatotropic axis, including GHRH, GH, and IGF-1. Subordinate baboons, for example, have lower levels of the anabolic hormone IGF-1, which is in part controlled by GH secretion. 1
