Neuropsychological investigations of individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have suggested both global and specific impairments in performance on standardized tests of memory.'** Given the well-established relation between recent memory impairment and hippocampal regions of the brain? these findings are of great interest and consistent with reports of diminished hippocampal volume in this disorder." Most studies of neuropsychological function in PTSD have only examined PTSD in the context of a normal control population and have been unable to determine whether deficits are associated specifically with the development of PTSD or reflect a general response to trauma exposure. The current investigation reports the results of a study assessing attention, memory, visuospatial skills, and executive (frontal lobe) function in PTSD in which trauma-exposed non-PTSD individuals serve as a control.
