The pulmonary microvasculature contains a large marginated pool of neutrophils (PMNs)' whose passage through the pulmonary circulation is delayed during cigarette smoking2 They may become activated by exposure to cigarette smoke and thus contribute to lung damage. We previously showed that exposure to cigarette smoke in vitro reduces the deformability of PMNs,~ and we questioned whether this might influence the sequestration of PMNs in the lung. We therefore developed a rat model to investigate the factors that influence the passage of PMNs through the pulmonary circulation.
