The problem of designing masonry to resist seismic loading has a two-part solution: 1) Reinforcement can be provided in the joints and cores to improve the tensile and shear strengths to acceptable levels of reliability. 2) Boundary conditions can be provided for this modified material that will be compatible with its strengths and limitations
