I am pleased to be able to participate in this conference honoring Dr. Friend. I first met Dr. Friend in Tokyo in 1966 when she, I, and Dr. Duesberg shared a cab. At that time I was just beginning work with avian leukosis viruses, and my interests were focused on how these viruses transformed normal cells to malignant cells. At the time of this symposium honoring Dr. Friend and her research contributions, I am again starting a new area of research, work with human immunodeficiency virus type‐1 (HIV‐1). It is the early work of my laboratory with HIV‐1 that I am going to report on today. The work I will be describing was done by Dr. Mohan Somasundaran, a highly accomplished postdoctoral fellow in my laboratory.
