Some of the obvious factors that affect the success rates, in terms of living children, of in vitro fertilization (IVF) are the ages of the patients, the quality of ovulation and spermatogenesis, and the general and gynecologic health of the female partner in terms of the safe initiation and maintenance of a pregnancy to full term. Discussion of the selection of patients must take into account the indications for IVF and embryo replacement (ER). The clinical applications at present are infertility due to: (1) problems of ovum pickup and transport associated with pelvic pathology or absence of the oviducts; (2) oligospermia; (3) prolonged unexplained infertility; and (4) combined male and female factors.
