If we accept the premise that the systemic viral exanthemata, as measles, rubella, varicella, and variola, as well as poliomyelitis, are controllable with current and future vaccines, the discussion this evening is primarily related to respiratory disease. Furthermore, if we exclude infectious hepatitis, there are few known viral diseases of significant incidence which justify energetic antiviral research.
