Summary A rational approach to the diagnosis and management of gynecologic problems in young females depends heavily upon the results of laboratory examinations. Properly selected tests are indispensable in the investigation of sexual ambiguity, certain types of developmental anomalies, sexual precocity, infections, and neoplasms, Many of these can be carried out on an outpatient basis. The more sophisticated, highly specialized techniques, although less frequently required, are performed in an increasing number of centers and all have been made generally available.
