The continuous rise of performance levels in sports and athletics during the twentieth century represents an aspect of human variation which reflects not only genetic and extraneously engendered variants but also a number of highly complex social, educational, nutritional, public health and economic changes. Its nature and scope were identified in a series of epidemiologic, physiologic, sociological, psychological and clinical studies which have yielded new insights into the problems of growth and development and of the structure of the human personality, its genetic pattern as well as its modification through environmental influences.
