Despite the considerable recent expansion in the study of the physiological effects of hypothermia during the past two decades, beginning with Fay's1 application of generalized hypothermia for therapeutic purposes, we are still without exact knowledge concerning either the mean lethal temperature or the exact nature of death in accidental exposure either to cold water or very cold air. Reasonably exact information is available only for the anesthetized dog subjected to cold-water immersion.
