Surgical treatment of acute intervertebral disc prolapse (Hansen type 1) normally requires myelography to accurately localise the lesion. When performing or interpreting myelograms in dogs with this condition, a number of problems may arise that have not been emphasised by existing radiology texts. Technical problems include difficulties injecting the contrast medium, poor distribution of contrast medium and incorrect radiographic views; pathoanatomical problems include atypical displacement of disc material and spinal cord swelling. These problems, and ways of avoiding them, are described.
