A six‐year‐old dobermann pinscher sustained a spontaneous rupture of the cervical oesophagus following severe tenesmus as a postoperative complication of abdominal surgery. The clinical and histopathological features of this case are described. Since this condition does not appear to have been reported to date in the dog the literature describing this condition in man is briefly reviewed.
