ABSTRACT This article outlines the three main categories of genetic disease: chromosomal, Mendelian and multifactorial disorders. The modes of inheritance and characteristic patterns of the last two categories are described. This article is the second in a series of three concerned with the identification of an hereditary component to the cause of disease.
