Abdominal palpation and radiography are the techniques generally used by the veterinary surgeon for pregnancy diagnosis in the dog. Diagnostic ultrasound is an imaging modality which has been widely used in human obstetrics for many years. It is now clear that ultrasound can provide useful information about the canine pregnancy, particularly with respect to fetal viability. The advantages and limitations of abdominal palpation, radiography and ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis and assessment of fetal viability in the dog are discussed.
