The keeping of animals in schools is discussed, with particular reference to aspects which are of relevance to the veterinary profession. Important considerations are the attitudes of teachers and others, numbers and species of animals, sources, animal care, legal considerations, breeding, culling and euthanasia and health hazards. The role of the veterinary surgeon in ensuring that animals are kept humanely, are of maximum value, and least danger to children is emphasized.
