This paper describes the structure, functions, distribution and normal values of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and its isoenzymes in canine tissues and serum. The diagnostic value of the enzyme is discussed in liver and bone disease, neoplasia, and endocrine disorders including hyperadrenocor‐ticalism, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. The effects of therapy with glucocorticoids, anticonvulsants and tolbutamide on serum AP are described. At present, AP is of the greatest diagnostic value in liver, bone and endocrine disease in the dog but its use in neoplastic conditions and in intestinal and renal disease has yet to be fully investigated.
