Spinal radiographs were made of fifty‐nine cadavers and examined for the presence of vertebral osteophytes. The osteophytes were classified into two types and examined histologically. It was concluded that the end‐plate osteophyte (type 1) represents spondylosis performans and that the type 2 osteophyte may fit into definition of the human condition, ankylosing hyperostosis.
