Blood samples were collected from crossbred dogs rendered transiently hypoglucosaemic or hyperglucosaemic by intravenous injection of tolbutamide or dextrose. Whole blood glucose levels determined with ‘Dextrostix’ and an ‘Eyetone’ reflectance colorimeter were compared with plasma glucose levels measured by the hexokinase and ortho‐toluidine methods. The Dextrostix‐Eyetone method gave results which correlated well with those obtained by the other two techniques, and the degree of precision attained was judged satisfactory for clinical purposes. The Dextrostix‐Eyetone system also has several practical advantages for veterinary clinicians.
