Literature concerning anaesthesia for Caesarean section in the dog and cat is reviewed. The maternal and foetal requirements for a successful method of anaesthesia are discussed with reference to general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, neuroleptanaesthesia and dissociative anaesthesia. A method for evaluating the technique used is described.
