A new stud dog was introduced into a kennel of toy poodles and, out of a total of 28 puppies, produced four with Perthes' disease. An analysis of the pedigrees of the dog and the ten bitches with which he was mated gave results which were consistent with the hypothesis that Perthes' disease is caused by homozygosity for an autosomal recessive gene.
