The vaginal smear was studied in relation to the rest of the genital tract during metoestrus and anoestrus in the bitch. The smear of progressive metoestrus contained superficial, large intermediate, small intermediate and parabasal cells. Cytolysis was absent and WBCs were abundant. In regressive metoestrus, there was a shift towards more basal type cells. Also, cuboidal and columnar cells became common and cytolysis was present. In anoestrus, parabasal and small intermediate cells, in addition to cuboidal and columnar, were the dominant cell types in the smear. Cytolysis was now marked and WBCs were absent or scarce.
