Diagnosis of malignancy almost always rests upon a histopathological examination of the lesion, and the importance of establishing the histological nature of the disease as early as possible is emphasized. Factors affecting prognosis are enumerated and discussed. Early diagnosis and an understanding of prognostic features are prerequisites to planning a vigorous and rational treatment regime from the initial presentation of the case; such an approach may improve the survival and quality of life for tumour–bearing animals.
