SUMMARY In general, the objectives of treatment of degenerative joint disease are to restore function and to prevent further deterioration of the joint, with the object of returning the dog to the type of life it leads, without it being a burden on its owners. Selection of the method of treatment requires sound diagnosis, good clinical assessment and an appraisal of all the relevant circumstances in each case. No simple ‘automatic’ guide lines can be applied to all cases which mill indicate the optimal method of treatment to be employed.
