Symposium on Canine Recto‐Anal Disorders—I: Clinical Anatomy *

— The rectum, anal canal and anus are delimited and described, and the blood supply, innervation and lymphatic drainage summarized. These structures are considered in the light of present knowledge of the mechanisms of faecal continence. Certain aspects of the anatomy of the peIvic diaphragm are discussed in relationship to perineal hernia. Experiments on the evacuation of the anal sacs are described, and the functional significance of the sacs is discussed. Résumé— Après avoir délimité et décrit le rectum, le canal anal et Panus, Pauteur en expose brièvement les vaisseaux sanguins, l'innervation et le systhème lymphatique, qu'il examine à la lumière des connaissances actuelles concernant le méanisme de la continence des matières fécales. Il étudie en outre certains aspects de l'anatomie de la cloison pelvienne par rapport aux hernies péinéales. Il décrit des expériences portant sur l'évacuation des glandes anales et examine la fonction de celles‐ci. Zusammenfassung— Rectum, Analkanal und Anus werden umgrenzt und beschrieben und die Blutzufuhr, die Innervation und der Lymphabfluss zusammenfassend behandelt. Diese Strukturen werden im Lichte des gegenwärtigen Wissens vom Mechanismus der Faeceskontinenz betrachtet. Bestimmte Aspekte der Anatomie der Beckenmembran werden in Beziehung zur Perinealhernie besprochen. Versuche der Entleerung der Analsacke werden beschrieben und die funktionelle Bedeutung der Säcke erläutert.
