TOPIC EDITOR'S NOTE: The issue of availability of pharmacists is gaining importance in rural health care. In 1999, for example, Congress responded to growing concern over a potential pharmacist shortage by directing the secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct a study of the pharmacist workforce. The agency was to determine the extent of any shortage and was also directed to seek comments regarding the issue. The report, delivered to Congress in fall 2000 with evidence indicating an emerging shortage of these professionals, has important implications for health care in rural areas. This Crossroads feature by pharmacist Timothy P. Stratton, Ph.D., offers additional insight by combining a brief review, personal experience and findings of a preliminary study to help tire journal focus attention on this issue.
