This paper describes the background to, and the development of, the coastal‐management strategy since the mid‐1980s for the coastal frontage between Brighton Marina and Saltdean. The justification methodology had to develop with the changes in Government policy for coastal‐defence projects. In 1996, the Department for Environment. Food and Rural Affairs required the strategy to be reviewed, ten years after its initial acceptance. Construction work on the third and final scheme commenced in January 2003.
