This paper reviews the global demand for water resources in the first part of the twenty‐first century and draws attention to initiatives to improve access to safe water for the world's population. It highlights the benefits of the adoption of an integrated water‐resources management strategy, drawing on a recent case study in Africa, and suggests guidelines for the framework to be adopted in such a strategy. The role of private‐sector participation in water‐resource development in developing and emerging economies is reviewed, and key aspects (related to its success) are highlighted.
