This paper discusses a survey of users of contaminated‐land information and guidance. The survey was designed to assist in the understanding of user needs in the context of the developing risk‐based approach to decision‐making. Environment Agency staff, local authority officers, consultants and specialists within major industrial companies contributed. The results suggest that, whilst highly qualified in their specific environmental and scientific disciplines, people are faced with many issues (in relation to contaminated land) with insufficient technical background and assistance. The potential impact of such deficiencies is discussed, together with possible solutions.
