A sewage‐treatment odour‐prevention model has been developed as a result of investigations using an environmental wind tunnel. The model was validated at a full‐scale sewage‐treatment works and realistic estimates of odour‐emission rates from a variety of sewage‐treatment processes were obtained. The model can be used to predict odour and hydrogen sulphide gas‐emission rates from many types of sewage‐treatment processes, offering (a) improved reliability in odour‐emission rate quantification, (b) reduced monitoring costs, and (c) an improved insight into the causes of odour problems.
