This paper examines the limited information on the actual performance of sewage‐treatment works as reflected in discharge quality from European Community member states. The control regimes for such effluents as well as the proportion of population served by sewerage and various levels of sewage treatment are contrasted between member states. Standards for river water quality and an assessment of actual river quality are then contrasted. These suggest that in the UK, river quality is considerably better overall than in other member states.
