In France, from a legal standpoint, the protection of aquifers and wellheads supplying drinking water is achieved through wellhead protection zones. Within these zones, which are defined by a certified geologist, the appropriate restrictions which are needed to minimize the risk of pollution are specified. Unfortunately, despite these precautions, accidents are still possible, and it is for this reason that Lyonnaise des Eaux‐Dumez has developed, for the Paris region, a true pollution risk management strategy, based on procedures, alert systems, computer models and crisis drills.
